April is our month of movies that are just weird or different enough not to fit into some of the other themes we had assigned to each month. That being said, we start the month off with Dead Ringers and The Last Temptation of Christ. Both a little controversial. Both created by visionary directors. Both a little unsettling.
The divide between East and West is meaningless when you’re an angel. You can come and go, observing humanity throughout the course of eternity… until the day you decide you want to become one of them. This one is the classic German film of an angel who decides to give up eternity for a chance at love and humanity: Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin).
Victor Laszlo believes in freedom. Ilsa believes in Victor. Rick believed in his love for Ilsa. We wanted to believe that Rick and Ilsa didn’t “get together” in that one scene because it just makes other conversations awkward later. Mostly, though, we want you to believe that the hype is real. Casablanca is one of the greatest movies ever made and we celebrate its 75th anniversary by taking a look back at this classic cinematic masterpiece.
